| In this section we want to give you an overview over the different hardware components and their tasks within our usability testing solution: | |||

The screen recorder is a stand alone device (size of a VCR) that captures the VGA monitor signal (up to 1600x1200 with 10-15 frames/sec), converts it into a MPEG 4 video and saves this video on its own internal 40 GB hard disk. An one hour monitor video is aprox. 120-150 MB thus it is no problem to perform long test sessions. The screen recorder is controlled (Start/stop recording, file transfer) via a TCP/IP connection by the "Spectator" software that runs on a separate PC. It is possible to connect a monitor to the recorder to see the recorded monitor signal. Directly after the recording session the monitor video is transferred to the "Spectator" PC. |

A digital video camera is used to camcord the user. If the internal microphone of the camera is not sufficient, an external microphone can be connected to the camera. Both audio and video are streamed to the "Spectator" PC via FireWire to be encoded into a digital movie file and synchronized with the monitor video.

The recording PC/Notebook with the "Spectator" software is the heart of the system. It - controls the recording - converts the signal of the video camera (user video and audio) into a digital video file - synchronizes the monitor video made by the screen recorder and the user video - provides short cuts to code the behaviors and mark interesting scenes - provides an annotation function - generates a statistical analysis of the coded behaviors - creates a CD for your clients with the videos and your coding results |

|
If you want to move the camera(s), it can be mounted on a pan-tilt holder.

The pan-tilt holder(s) are controlled by a control panel. It is possible to control multiple pan-tilt holders with one panel.

A push-to-talk microphone can be used in a fixed lab to communicate with the participant in the test room.
|
|
The video of the participant is displayed in the "Spectator" software. An additional video monitor can be used to split the video signal and to share the participants video with other observers.

Additional PC monitors can be used to split the monitor image and to share it with other observers.
